This workshop is designed for individuals who want to build long-term wealth using a proven approach. This wealth building process is executed through a systematic approach of diligent research and patient execution of an investment strategy, adapted by the participant to fit his own risk appetite and investment objectives.

This workshop advocates the buy-and-hold strategy and recommends minimum trading. Therefore, this workshop is best suited for investors who do not have time to trade in stocks and monitor the market frequently, but enjoy the process and challenge of developing a deep knowledge in the companies they have invested for the long term.

Workshop Synopsis

This workshop introduces the participants to both the concepts and the practical aspects of investing in equities, in a simplified way for non-professional investors. Key investment approach covered in this workshop is based on the philosophy of value investing, as expounded by Benjamin Graham, and successfully adopted by Warren Buffet. The workshop is conducted over 14 hours in 2 sessions of 7 hours each. The key topics covered in the workshop are as follows:

  1. Business Accounting
  2. Financial Mathematics
  3. Stock Selection
  4. Company Analysis and Due Diligence
  5. Valuation
  6. Risk Management
  7. Portfolio Execution

Teaching Methodology

This workshop is structured in modules of short lectures and followed immediately with hands-on exercises to help each participant gain a deeper understanding and practical knowledge of the concepts being taught. Assistants will be around to coach the participants how to complete the exercises and answer questions thatparticipants may have. There will be an extensive use of laptops and the Internet to access market and company financial data, and use of online investment tools to analyse financial data and structure investment portfolios.

As this workshop is designed for the non-professional, sufficient time will be allocated for question-and-answer sessions to ensure that all participants learn the skills to invest his or her own money in the equities market to build long-term wealth. In order to ensure quality training and maximum interaction with the trainer and assistants, the number of participants in each workshop is limited to 20.

Anticipated Learning Outcomes:

After completing the Applied Value Investing Workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Interpret basic financial reports and ratios for investment decisions
  2. Search for financial data online and analyse this data to filter out investment opportunities
  3. Construct an equities portfolio that should generate the expected return, enabling investors to achieve wealth building goals
  4. Monitor portfolio performance and make appropriate rebalancing when necessary
  5. Determine entry and exit points in the equities market, guided by a disciplined process of valuation and taking advantage of market volatility

Workshop Requirements

This workshop is conducted in English and designed for people who do not have professional training in investment management. Therefore, participants are:

  1. Not required to have prior investment knowledge
  2. Required to have knowledge of basic mathematics and business accounts
  3. Required to have experience in using the calculator and laptop computer

Resource and Materials

Participants should bring their own simple calculator and a laptop. Participants will be given a set of lecture notes and workbook, and a user ID and password to access the WIFI network at the classroom.

Trainers’ Profiles

Peter Lai Hock Meng, CFA graduated with a BA (Honours) degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge, UK in 1980. He obtained his MA (Cantab) in 1983. Peter’s has more than 30 years of experience in investment consulting, treasury management, asset management, corporate finance and securities trading. His career spans from being an investment officer in a central bank, chief foreign exchange dealer in a local bank, managing director of a global stockbroking firm to regional market manager of a regional private bank and CEO of an asset manager for a real estate investment trust. He was also formerly an Adjunct Associate Professor in the NUS Business School and the Director-in-Residence with the Saw Centre for Financial Studies. He also lectured in Singapore Management University and Nanyang Technological University. He now manages his own retirement fund, and sits on the boards of several listed companies and advises charities and foundations on the management of their reserves.

Puah Soon Lim graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration. He is also a CFA. Soon Lim has more than 20 years of experience in the financial and investment industries, spanning from money broking, merchant banking, bond sales and trading, investment planning, insurance sales and management of a wealth management sales team. His last decade was spent in a stock broking firm’s wealth management unit. He is currently the Associate Director of an Independent Financial Advisor. He works with both individual and institutional investors to provide customised advice on optimal asset allocation. His extensive experience and thorough knowledge in wealth management enables him to break down difficult concepts into easy-to-understand components.

SkillsFuture Credit

With effect from January 2016, Singaporeans aged 25 years and above who received their SkillsFuture Credit account activation letter will be eligible for an initial credit of $500 which can be used to pay for course fees for a range of eligible courses. SkillsFuture credits can be used for this course.

IBF-FTS Funding

The Financial Training Scheme (“FTS”) provides funding for financial sector-specific training programmes which are recognized under FTS. This scheme is only eligible for company-sponsored participants who are Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents, physically based in Singapore, and who have successfully completed a FTS programme. Financial Institutions (MAS licensed or exempt entities), involved in or supporting financial sector activities, are eligible to submit claims for company-sponsored participants.

For all FTS programmes commencing on or after 1 July 2016, Singapore Citizens aged 40 years old and above will be eligible for 90% co-funding of direct training costs, subject to existing grant caps of S$2,000 per programme. Singapore Permanent Residents and Singapore Citizens below 40 years old will continue to be eligible for 50% co-funding of direct training costs for FTS programmes.

Changes

Singapore Exchange reserves the right to make changes to the time, date, syllabus, speakers, venue or cancel the course if warranted by circumstances beyond its control.

Cancellation and Transfer Policy

Cancellation for a registration must be made in writing at least 10 business days before the event and a refund (less a 10% administrative fee of total course fee) will be made. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than 10 business days prior to the event. All requests for replacement must be made in writing at least 3 business days prior to the event.
